Zhu received M.Sc., in 1987 from the University of Sci. & Tech. of China and PhD in 1995 from Chalmers University of Technology, Physics and Engineering Physics, Sweden and 10/ 95-12/97, Postdoc in Uppsala University (Ångström Lab). Since 1998, Dr. Zhu moved to KTH and in 1999 became associate professor /PhD supervisor until 2018. He is visiting professor in Aalto University and Nanyang Technological University and Lough borough University as well as in several Chinese universities to co-supervise research projects and PhD students.
Zhu has established several research teams in Chinese universities combined with EC - China NANOCOFC (Nanocomposites for advanced fuel cells) research network, www.nanocofc.com. Dr. Zhu made a fuel cell breakthrough on electrolyte (layer)-free fuel cell (EFFC), single layer fuel cells (SLFCs), semiconductor membrane fuel cell (SMFC) as next-generation high-efficient fuel-to-electricity conversion based on the Nano-redox generator. He has established Semiconductor Ionics and Semiconductor Electrochemistry to design and develop super ionic conductors and advanced energy applications. These new inter disciplines play an important guidance role in energy conversion and energy storage (such as batteries, etc). In 2020, he led the group published an article in Science about the semiconductor hetero junction field affection driving proton transport, the new mechanism of super proton conduction; In 2021, led a publication in the Electrochemical Energy Review about "Semiconductor Electrochemistry for Clean Energy Conversion and Storage". His research field has been granted an Innovation Award of WSSET 2018 (World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies) www.wsset.organd Award for Shuang Chunag Talent, Jiangsu provincial Innovation Program (2021).
Zhu’s H-index is 65 (@ Google scholar)with citations about 15000. He is one of the Most Cited scholars in China (Energy sector, Elsevier) continuously every year since 2014- and entered the Stanford University released the "world's top 2% scientists list".
